If your computer is slow, getting pop-ups, or freezing, you likely have malware. Windows Defender is great at prevention, but sometimes you need a specialized tool for removal.
Step 1: Emergency Scanners
We recommend these free "on-demand" scanners. They don't replace your antivirus, but they are aggressive cleaners.
-
1Malwarebytes Free The legendary malware hunter. Run a "Custom Scan" and enable "Scan for Rootkits".
-
2HitmanPro A cloud-based "second opinion" scanner that often finds what others miss.
-
3AdwCleaner Owned by Malwarebytes, this tool specifically targets toolbars and crapware.
Step 2: The Cleanup Process
1. Disconnect Internet
Pull the plug (literally) or turn off Wi-Fi. This stops malware from "phoning home" to the hacker.
2. Boot into Safe Mode
Hold Shift while clicking Restart in Windows. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart > Press 4.
3. Run the Scanners
Install and run Malwarebytes. Delete anything it finds. Then run AdwCleaner to remove browser hijackers.
How to Stay Safe
The "Golden Rule" of Security
Active Protection > Removal. Cleaning malware is messy and sometimes impossible (like ransomware). Using a top-tier antivirus prevents the infection in the first place.
